Next BSRLM Conference

The British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM) organises a day conference in each academic term. BSRLM is for people interested in research in mathematics education and provides a supportive environment for both new and experienced researchers to develop their ideas.

The BSRLM New Researchers’ Day (Friday 10th June 2016) and the BSRLM Conference (Saturday 11th June 2016) will be held at Loughborough University (James France Building).

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

BSRLM New Researchers’ Day (Friday 10th June 2016; 10:30-18:00)

‘New’ in the title is open to your interpretation: the day is intended for research students, post doc researchers, newly appointed lecturers (perhaps those starting in research) and anyone who thinks ‘this sounds good’. ‘Mathematics’ in BSRLM should be regarded widely and researchers in education whose research has a strong but not exclusive connection with mathematics are very welcome.

There is no charge for the day and you do not need to be a member of the BSRLM (but we hope that you will join if you are not). Light refreshments, lunch and evening meal (if you stay on for the Saturday meeting) are self-funded. Financial support from the Leone Burton Fund will provide Bed and Breakfast accommodation for anyone attending the New Researcher’s Day and staying on for the BSRLM Day Conference the following day. (If you are able to cover the costs from another source, please do so as the Leone Burton Fund depends upon donations) The amount per person is capped at £40.

The New Researchers’ Day will start at 10:30 (to allow time for travelling) and go on to about 18:00 (depending on the number of presentations). The programme for the day will include four short keynote talks on the theme of “Alternative Methods in Mathematics Education”. These will be practical how-to talks that offer researchers alternative and rigorous approaches to addressing research questions.

Dr. Sophie Batchelor - Developing and Validating Research Tasks
Dr. Lara Alcock and Arun Godwin-Patel- Social Networking Methods
Dr. Matthew Inglis - Corpus Linguistics
Dr. Ian Jones - Comparative Judgement for Measuring Understanding

We hope that many of you who attend the NRD will also want to present. A presentation does not need to be the presentation of a finished product – you can present ‘ongoing research’ with issues for attendees to discuss supportively. We hope the day will provide a mixture of presentation styles. All presentations of 30 minutes in length and should include, at least, 10 minutes for wider discussion. We will be based in a room with a computer and a projector.

If you wish to attend and/or present your paper at the New Researchers’ Day Conference, please complete the on-line registration form here by 17:00 on Friday 27th May 2016.

The presentation guideline can be found here.
